What does a grounding pillow case actually do?
Most grounding stops at your collarbone — your fitted sheet covers your back, your blanket your torso, but the six to eight hours of nightly contact between your head and your pillow go uncovered. The Earthbound® grounding pillow case fills that gap, putting your face, neck, jaw, and scalp in direct contact with the Earth's free electrons all night. It connects to the ground through any standard outlet — the same simple setup as our fitted sheets — and works passively while you sleep, with no charging or maintenance.
Why does grounding the head and neck matter?
The head and neck hold the densest concentration of nerves, blood vessels, and lymphatic drainage in the body — and they're exactly where daytime tension, oxidative load, and ambient EMF tend to accumulate. Grounding this region may help support the body's natural anti-inflammatory processes, and research on grounding suggests it may ease facial and jaw tension, calm the nervous system, and support skin health through reduced oxidative stress. A conductive surface against your head overnight also helps reduce static around the hair and acts as an EMF-shielding layer against the day's accumulated exposure.
Carbon fiber or silver — which should I choose?
Both ground you fully; the difference is the material and the feel. Black is conductive carbon fiber — inert, non-reactive, and built to ground identically year after year without oxidizing. Gray and White use 12% ultra-fine silver fiber woven into 88% organic cotton, which many prefer for its softer, more traditional cotton feel and its extra help reducing static around the hair. Whichever you choose, the grounding connection itself is the same.
How fast will I notice a difference?
Everyone's body is different, but most customers report better sleep and less morning tension within the first few nights. Deeper benefits tend to build over the first month of consistent nightly use. A growing body of peer-reviewed research on grounding associates it with a range of favorable outcomes, including improved sleep depth and faster sleep onset, reduced markers of chronic inflammation, calmer nervous-system activity, a normalizing effect on the stress hormone cortisol, improved circulation, and reduced morning puffiness and facial tension.
Can I use it on its own, or do I need the mattress pad too?
Either works. The pillow case grounds you fully on its own and is a perfect entry point to earthing. That said, it's designed to complete a setup rather than replace one — most grounding products leave the head uncovered, so pairing the pillow case with our grounding mattress pad or quilted pads gives you true head-to-toe coverage through the night. Use it standalone, or layer it in for full-body grounding.
Is it safe, and how do I care for it?
Completely safe. No electricity from the grid ever flows through it to you — it connects only to the grounding wire in your outlet, drawing in the Earth's free electrons and nothing more, the same way our fitted sheets work. For washing, machine wash cold on a gentle cycle and air dry to preserve conductivity; avoid bleach and fabric softeners, which can coat the conductive fibers over time. With normal care it keeps grounding you night after night.

Most grounding stops at your collarbone. Your head and neck go uncovered all night.

Your fitted sheet covers your back, your blanket covers your torso, but the six to eight hours your head spends on the pillow go ungrounded. The head and neck hold the densest concentration of nerves, blood vessels, and lymphatic drainage in the body, and they are exactly where daytime tension, oxidative load, and ambient EMF tend to accumulate.

Grounding pillow cover placed on bed
6-8 hrs of nightly head and neck contact, most setups leave ungrounded

The pillow case puts your face, neck, jaw, and scalp in direct contact with the Earth's free electrons all night. Free electrons may help neutralize free radicals and support the body's natural anti-inflammatory processes, while the conductive surface also helps reduce static around the hair and buffers against the day's accumulated EMF exposure.

Recommended use: Pair with a Grounding Mattress Pad for true head-to-toe coverage through the night.

Whole-body grounding

One connection. Felt everywhere.

Modern life keeps you insulated from the Earth's free electrons. Reconnecting may support nearly every system that inflammation touches.

Sleep & circadian rhythm

Grounding may help regulate cortisol and calm the nervous system at night, so you fall asleep faster and wake more rested. Many people notice deeper, less interrupted sleep within the first week.

FAQ

Do grounding pillow cases actually work?

Yes, and the science backs it up. The Earth's surface holds a continuous supply of free electrons that, when transferred to the body through direct skin contact, can neutralize the positive charges that accumulate from daily stress and inflammation. Studies have shown that grounding may help reduce chronic inflammation and pain, including relief from conditions like arthritis, while also improving blood circulation to enhance oxygen and nutrient delivery throughout the body. Research also links grounding to better cognitive function, improved mood, memory, and mental clarity, and during sleep specifically, it can help regulate cortisol levels to reduce stress and help you stay asleep, with deeper, more restorative rest supported by synchronized circadian rhythms.

How do I know if my outlet is properly grounded?

Manufacturers recommend using an outlet tester before connecting your grounding cord — it's a quick, inexpensive way to confirm your outlet is properly grounded and safe to use. Simply plug the tester into your socket and check the indicator lights; most hardware stores carry them for just a few dollars. One important note: always disconnect all grounding products during thunderstorms to eliminate any risk of electric shock from lightning strikes.

Can I use the pillow case with a regular pillowcase layered on top?

No, for maximum effectiveness, your skin needs to directly touch the grounding pillowcase. Layering a standard, non-conductive pillowcase on top blocks the flow of Earth's electrons and breaks the grounding connection entirely. To experience the full benefits, use the pillowcase closest to your skin, whether you sleep naked or in light, natural-fabric clothing.

Will washing the pillow case reduce its conductivity?

Not if you follow the care instructions. Machine wash in warm or cold water and tumble dry on a low setting, and avoid bleach, fabric softeners, and dryer sheets, as these coat the conductive fibers and degrade conductivity over time. Our pillowcases are built to maintain performance even after tens of thousands of abrasion cycles, and with proper care, can last as long as a regular pillowcase, typically two to three years.

Do I need a special electrical setup?

No special electrical setup is needed. Simply place the pillowcase over your pillow, connect the grounding cord to a grounded outlet, and the electrical connection with the earth is established. We recommend using an outlet tester first to confirm your outlet is properly grounded, and always disconnect your grounding connection cord during thunderstorms as a precaution against lightning-related electrical surges.

What is the difference between a grounding pillowcase and grounding sheets?

Grounding sheets and grounding mats are designed to ground your body through contact with your torso, legs, and arms, while a grounding pillowcase specifically targets the head and neck, an area most grounding products leave uncovered. They all use conductive fibers — carbon or silver depending on the product — woven into natural fabrics or finishes that conduct earth's electrons, balance currents, and help prevent static electricity. Pairing a grounding pillowcase with Earthbound fitted grounding sheets gives you complete, night-long coverage for the strongest possible grounding effect.

What's the difference between the black, gray, and white pillow cases?

All three variants deliver the same grounding effect — direct contact with the conductive fibers transfers Earth's electrons to your head and neck while you sleep. The difference is the conductive material.

The black pillow case is built with conductive carbon fiber — the same material used in our #1 best-selling Earthbound mattress pad. Carbon fiber is inert, won't oxidize, and maintains its conductivity essentially indefinitely. The black is our top-selling variant for buyers who want true "buy it once" performance.

The gray and white pillow cases use 12% pure silver fiber woven into organic cotton — the same construction as our grounding blanket and sheets. Silver-fiber cotton has a softer hand-feel and lets you match the pillow case to your bedroom aesthetic. With proper care (no bleach, no fabric softener, no dryer sheets), silver-fiber pillow cases typically last two to three years.

If longevity matters most, choose black. If color matching or fabric softness matters more, choose gray or white.
