Grounding can help normalize cortisol — the body's primary stress hormone — and ease the physical toll of stress, supporting calmer, deeper recovery.

— Sinatra et al., Biomedical Journal, 2023

What does a grounding yoga mat actually do?
Yoga has always been about connection — breath to body, body to ground. But standard rubber and foam mats are electrically inert, insulating you from the Earth for the entire hour you're barefoot on the floor. The Earthbound® Grounding Yoga Mat restores that missing connection, putting your bare hands and feet in direct contact with the Earth's free electrons through a durable conductive carbon fiber surface that's inert, cushioned, and resistant to oxidation. It connects to the ground through any standard outlet, with no charging or maintenance.
How do I set it up and practice on it?
Roll it out, connect the included grounding cord to any standard grounded outlet, and practice as you normally would — barefoot, with bare hands on the mat. The direct skin contact is the point: no fabric layer sits between you and the conductive surface, so every pose keeps you grounded. Moisture from practice only strengthens the connection. At 4mm it cushions the joints, grips through flow, and rolls up flat to travel.
How is this different from the mattress pad?
The yoga mat grounds you while you move; the mattress pad grounds you overnight. Your practice already draws the body toward calm and recovery, and the mat extends that window through direct contact rather than waiting for sleep. Many people use both — the yoga mat for practice, the pad in bed — for grounded contact around the clock.
Can grounding really make a difference during practice?
Research on grounding is a renewed area of study within complementary and integrative medicine, and a growing body of peer-reviewed work associates it with a range of favorable outcomes. During practice, the steady flow of electrons may help calm the nervous system, support circulation, and aid recovery between sessions. A 2023 peer-reviewed review also reported that grounding may help normalize cortisol, the body's primary stress hormone.
What benefits might I notice?
Everyone responds differently, but reported effects may include a calmer nervous system, faster recovery from physical exertion, reduced muscle and joint tension, reduced markers of chronic inflammation, improved circulation, a normalizing effect on the stress hormone cortisol, and better sleep quality following an evening practice. Most people notice a calmer, more centered baseline first, with deeper benefits building over consistent use.
Is it safe and durable?
On both counts, yes. No electricity from the grid ever flows through the mat to you — it connects only to the grounding wire in your outlet, drawing in the Earth's free electrons and nothing more. And the conductive carbon fiber surface is built to last: inert, non-reactive, and resistant to the oxidation that degrades lesser materials over time, so it keeps grounding you reliably practice after practice. Wipe it clean with a damp cloth as needed; avoid soaking or harsh solvents.

Most people only ground while they sleep. That leaves your whole practice on the table.

If you spend an hour on the mat moving, stretching, and holding poses, you are in exactly the state grounding may help support: a body working toward recovery, a nervous system winding down from the day, and muscles and joints asking to release the tension they have carried since morning.

Person rolling out a grounding yoga mat on a tiled floor
60+ mins of barefoot practice, fully reconnected to the Earth

The mat rolls out beneath your bare hands and feet, with no fabric layer between you and the surface. Every minute you are in contact, free electrons flow from the Earth, through the cord, into the conductive carbon fiber, and into your body, deepening the calm and recovery your practice is already building.

Recommended use: Pair with a Grounding Mattress Pad for around-the-clock coverage.

Whole-body grounding

One connection. Felt everywhere.

Modern life keeps you insulated from the Earth's free electrons. Reconnecting may support nearly every system that inflammation touches.

Stress & nervous system

Grounding has been associated with reduced sympathetic 'fight-or-flight' activity, helping the body shift toward rest and recovery.

"Grounding has been linked to benefits around sleep, inflammation, and overall wellbeing. But most people can’t spend their day barefoot outdoors. What I like about Earthbound is how accessible they make grounding, offering people a simple way to reconnect with the Earth from home."

Grounding yoga mat FAQ

Does a grounding yoga mat actually work?

Yes — a grounding yoga mat delivers the same earth connection as practicing barefoot outdoors, brought indoors to your floor. The conductive carbon fiber surface connects, through the included cord, to the grounding port of a standard outlet, placing your bare hands and feet in direct contact with the Earth's free electrons. This is the same principle, called grounding or earthing, that researchers have studied for years. Research suggests that this kind of direct contact with the earth may help support a calmer nervous system, healthy circulation, and recovery. The mat simply lets you stay connected through your entire practice, with nothing between your skin and the conductive surface.

How does the grounding yoga mat work?

Roll the mat out, snap the included cord onto it, and plug the other end into the grounding port of a standard outlet. From there, the conductive carbon fiber surface places your body in contact with the Earth's free electrons, drawn in through your home's grounding wire. Practice barefoot, with bare hands on the mat, so your skin makes direct contact. There is no electricity flowing through the mat to you — only the Earth's natural electrons travel through the connection.

Do I need to be barefoot for it to work?

Direct skin contact gives you the strongest connection, so practicing barefoot with bare hands on the mat is ideal — that's how most people use it. There's no fabric layer between you and the conductive surface, which is the whole point. Moisture from practice only strengthens the connection, so the harder you flow, the better the contact.

Is it safe? Does electricity run through it?

No electricity ever flows through the mat to you. It connects only to the grounding wire in your outlet — the same wire that safely carries excess charge to the earth — and draws in the Earth's free electrons, nothing more. The included cord has a built-in current-limiting resistor as an added safety measure. We recommend testing your outlet with the included tester before first use, and, as a simple precaution, disconnecting during thunderstorms.

How do I set it up?

Setup takes under a minute. First, plug the included outlet tester into your wall socket to confirm it's properly grounded. Then roll out the mat, snap one end of the cord to it, and plug the other end into the outlet's grounding port. That's it — roll out, connect, and you're grounded. No apps, no charging, and nothing to maintain.

What size and thickness is it, and how do I care for it?

The mat measures 72" x 24" (182 x 61 cm) with a 4mm cushioned, non-slip surface — sized for a full range of poses and thick enough to support the joints. Because it's conductive carbon fiber, it's inert and won't oxidize or lose conductivity the way silver-threaded mats can over time. Wipe it clean with a damp cloth as needed, and avoid soaking or harsh solvents. It rolls up flat for travel and storage.

How is this different from the mattress pad?

They solve different problems. The mattress pad keeps your whole body grounded passively while you sleep — broad, all-night coverage. The yoga mat grounds you while you move, through direct barefoot and hands-on contact during practice. Your session already draws the body toward calm and recovery, and the mat extends that window rather than waiting for sleep. Many people use both — the yoga mat for practice, the pad in bed — for grounded contact around the clock.
