The side effects people report with earthing products — grounding sheets, mats and pads — are mostly mild and early: tingling or buzzing on first contact, lighter sleep for a week or two, vivid dreams, static discharge, feeling warm on a solid pad, and no noticeable effect at all. Six reports follow, with the likely cause of each and what to do. Anyone with an implanted electronic device should ask a physician first.
The six reports
- Tingling, buzzing or warmth on first contact. Common in early nights; customers on Earthbound's page describe it fading after a night or two. Earthing.com attributes a tingling sensation to electron flow and says it moves up the body over 20 to 30 minutes.
- Lighter or broken sleep for a week or two. One Earthbound reviewer describes sleeping in four-hour blocks for two weeks before settling into full nights. Give it the 30 consistent nights the guarantee is written around.
- Vivid dreams. Reported frequently and usually described as neutral or welcome.
- A static snap when you first touch the sheet. That is your body's accumulated charge discharging to ground. It is not a shock from the wall; the cord connects to the ground port only and carries no current.
- Feeling warm. Reported on solid carbon surfaces by some sleepers (one Earthing.com reviewer found the cover warm). Earthbound's pad is perforated and lies under a cotton fitted sheet; a natural-fiber sheet on top is the fix.
- No noticeable effect. Also reported, including by one Earthing.com reviewer after several weeks. First check the connection with a multimeter; a tarnished silver sheet or an ungrounded outlet produces exactly this result.
What is not a side effect
A real electric shock. A grounding product plugged into the ground port cannot deliver mains current; Earthbound's cord includes a built-in 100k ohm resistor and no electricity flows into the pad. If you ever feel a genuine shock, the outlet is miswired — unplug and have it checked.
Who should ask a physician first
- Anyone with a pacemaker, defibrillator or other implanted electronic device.
- Anyone on medication whose dose is sensitive to changes in sleep, circulation or stress; discuss monitoring.
- Anyone unsure whether their outlet is grounded; use the included tester, or a grounding rod.
| Report | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Tingling / buzzing / warmth | First contact with ground; reported to fade in days | Continue; note whether it fades |
| Lighter sleep for 1–2 weeks | Adjustment period reported by some sleepers | Give it 30 consistent nights |
| Vivid dreams | Commonly reported; cause not established | No action needed |
| Static snap on first touch | Accumulated body charge discharging to ground | Normal; not mains current |
| Feels warm | Solid surface with synthetic sheet on top | Use a cotton or linen fitted sheet; Earthbound's pad is perforated |
| No effect | Ungrounded outlet, tarnished silver, synthetic bedding, lotion barrier | Outlet tester, multimeter, natural-fiber sheet; return within the trial |
Reducing the adjustment
Start with the outlet tester. Keep a natural-fiber sheet on top. Avoid lotions and oils at bedtime on silver sheets; they coat the fibers. And check the reading with a multimeter if nothing changes after a month: the most common cause of "no effect" is no connection. The Earthbound® Grounding Mattress Pad removes the lotion and washing variables because it grounds through your fitted sheet and is wiped clean.

Do I need bare skin contact? No. Near Field Earthing works through a layer of fabric like your fitted sheet or pajamas, so you can sleep normally and still stay grounded.
How do I set it up? Lay the pad under your fitted sheet, plug the grounding cord into a grounded wall outlet, and sleep. No apps, no charging, nothing to remember. A region-specific outlet adapter is included. FREE Outlet Tester included with every order.
Will it last? Yes. It is built from conductive carbon fiber, which will not oxidize or lose conductivity over time, unlike silver-thread products. It is a buy-it-once product, backed by a lifetime warranty.
Is it safe? The grounding cord includes a built-in 100k ohm resistor for safety. No electricity flows into the pad. Only the Earth's free electrons.

Frequently asked questions
Does grounding help neuropathy?
Earthbound does not make that claim. Some customers with nerve-related discomfort report easier nights on the product page; research on grounding has not specifically studied neuropathy. Ask your physician.
What does earthing mean?
Earthing and grounding are the same thing: putting the body in electrical contact with the surface of the earth, directly outdoors or indoors through a conductive product connected to a grounded outlet or rod.
Is grounding good for you?
Research suggests it may support sleep and may affect inflammation and stress markers; the studies are small and results vary. Side effects reported are mild and early.
Can you leave a grounding mat plugged in all the time?
Yes. It carries no current, so there is nothing to switch off. Earthbound suggests unplugging during thunderstorms as a precaution.
Who shouldn't use grounding sheets?
People with implanted electronic medical devices should ask a physician first. Anyone whose outlet tests as ungrounded should not plug in until it is fixed or they use a grounding rod.
