Type "earthing" into a search bar and autocomplete offers you "debunked." Fair enough. Grounding attracts two audiences that talk past each other — devotees who claim it fixes everything, and skeptics who've concluded from the devotees that there's nothing here. If you're the third kind of reader — genuinely curious whether there's signal under the noise — this article is for you. We're going to make the skeptics' case properly, concede the points they win, and then look at what survives.

The skeptics' case, made honestly

Criticism 1: The studies are small

Verdict: correct. The foundational sleep-and-cortisol pilot had twelve subjects. The blood-viscosity study had ten. The muscle-soreness pilot had eight. These are pilot studies in the technical sense — designed to detect whether a signal might exist, not to prove it does. Anyone citing them as proof is misusing them, and that includes grounding brands. Small studies produce inflated effect sizes with regularity; that's a statistical fact of life, not a conspiracy.

Criticism 2: Blinding is nearly impossible, so placebo can't be excluded

Verdict: mostly correct. Some studies used sham grounding (disconnected cords), which helps. But subjective endpoints — "I slept better," "I'm less sore" — are exactly where expectation effects live, and grounding studies lean on subjective endpoints. The counterweight is the objective measures: cortisol assays, red-cell zeta potential, and thermal imaging don't care what participants believe. Those findings are harder to wave away as placebo — but they come from the same small samples, so the criticism circles back to point one.

Criticism 3: The researchers have commercial ties

Verdict: partially correct, and worth knowing. Several prominent authors in this literature have been affiliated with grounding companies. That's a legitimate reason for heightened scrutiny — and a common situation in early-stage fields, where the only people funding research are the people who believe in it. It's a reason to demand independent replication, not a reason to declare the measurements fabricated.

Criticism 4: The proposed mechanism is hand-wavy

Verdict: half correct. The strong version of the mechanism claim — free electrons flowing in to neutralize inflammation — is a hypothesis, articulated in the literature (Chevalier et al., 2012) but not demonstrated at the cellular level in humans. Skeptics are right to call it unproven. Where some skeptics overreach is claiming the entire premise violates physics: it doesn't. That your body equalizes to earth potential on contact is textbook electrostatics, measurable with a $20 multimeter. The genuine open question is whether that electrical state has biological consequences — not whether it occurs.

Criticism 5: The marketing claims are absurd

Verdict: frequently correct, and it's the field's own fault. When sellers claim grounding cures arthritis, reverses heart disease, or replaces medication, they're not just wrong — they hand skeptics the whole argument. We'll say it plainly: no study supports disease-treatment claims for grounding, and brands making them are marketing past the evidence. The reasonable version of grounding never claimed to be medicine. It claims to restore a mundane physical condition — body at earth potential — that was humanity's default until about a century ago.

What survives the skeptics — the residue worth keeping

After conceding all of the above, here is what remains standing. One: the electrical phenomenon is real and verifiable by anyone. Two: the pilot literature, for all its size problems, is directionally consistent across independent-ish teams and different endpoints — sleep cortisol (Ghaly & Teplitz 2004), inflammatory markers and thermal imaging (Oschman et al. 2015), blood viscosity (Chevalier et al. 2013), muscle recovery (Brown et al. 2010). Consistent direction across varied small studies is weaker than one large trial, but it is not nothing. Three: the intervention's risk profile is about as low as wellness interventions get — it recreates the electrical state of standing barefoot outdoors. When potential upside is uncertain but plausible and downside is near zero, personal experimentation is rational even before science settles the question. That's a different claim than "it works," and it's the only claim the evidence currently licenses.
